Graduate Philosophy Highlights

Annual International Philosophical Seminar (IPS) at Alto Adige, Italy
Wilhelm Wurzer is the co-founder and co-director of this seminar, which brings together a group of distinguished international scholars in philosophy and literary theory each summer.

Ancient Philosophy and Research Assistantship
The journal Ancient Philosophy is edited by a member of the department, Ronald Polansky. A special Research Assistantship in Ancient Philosophy is partially funded by this journal.

Catholic Philosophy
Duquesne has had a long tradition of offering courses that highlight Catholic philosophers, such as Augustine, Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, Scheler, Maritain, Gilson, MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and others.

Certificate for Graduate Students in Developing and Teaching Online Liberal Arts Courses -- This two semester practicum trains graduate students to design educational Web sites and use them to teach online undergraduate courses. It includes three graduate credits and provides instruction (or requires proof of competency) in basic software programs needed to support distance learning. Students will also construct and plan lessons for their own undergraduate liberal arts Web site. More information can be found concerning this program here: www.duq.edu/~keyes/pamphlet1.html. Duquesne's Women in Philosophy program meets frequently through the academic year and hosts a number of talks and events.

Graduate Schools of the Pittsburgh Council of Higher Education
Cross Registration

Students may cross-register in the Graduate Schools of the Pittsburgh Council of Higher Education (Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) on a space-available basis for one course per semester, with the permission of an advisor.

University of Pittsburgh M.A. Degree in Philosophy
Selected full-time Duquesne graduate students may pursue an M.A. degree in philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh, which has an international reputation in philosophy of science and logic. This M.A. is taken after an M.A. has been granted from Duquesne University.

Exchange Program with the University of Leuven, Belgium
Selected students may study up to one year at the Institute of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

Graduate Student Colloqiua
The Graduate Students in Philosophy sponsor two colloqiua per year, fall and spring; papers by graduate students are selected and presented. There is also the annual EGO/GSIP Graduate Conference which is co-sponsored with other graduate programs.

Graduate Teaching Workshop
Dr. Rodemeyer runs a year-long workshop for all graduates students who are preparing to teach their own courses.

The Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center
The Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center in the Duquesne Gumberg Library is dedicated to the acquisition of literature dealing with phenomenological and contemporary continental thought, both in its philosophical expression and its application to the social and natural sciences.
Included in the Center are the Erwin Straus, Aron Gurwitsch, Jan Bouman, and Stephen Strasser alcoves and a copy of the Husserl Archives. The Center is the official archive of the World Phenomenology Institute. The Center also sponsors annual conferences on phenomenology that feature prominent scholars in philosophy, psychology, and theology.

St. Paul's Seminary
The Duquesne Philosophy Department teaches the pre-theology seminarians from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The coordinator for this program with the seminarians is Dr. Bonin.
